Perpetual Help Altas turn back Lyceum tossers in NCAA

Jhona Rosal led the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta with 20 points in a closely-fought encounter with the Lyceum Lady Pirates en route to a 25-27, 25-23, 26-24, 14-25, 17-15 triumph yesterday in the 95th National Collegiate Athletic Association women’s volleyball tournament.

Yanca Tripoli added 20 points and the Altas rode on her heroics in the fifth set to pull off their second straight win at at the Filoil Flying V Sports Centre.

Rosal and Tripoli saved the day for the Lady Altas, who fell behind at 13-14 after teammate Shyra Umandal sent her serve wide.

The Lady Altas fought back after Tripoli scored off a block in the next play for a 14-all lead.

After Hannah Suico gave back the lead to the Altas, 15-14, Tripoli misfired, sending her serve short for a 15-all tie.

The Lady Pirates then missed a chance to move ahead, after Jacq Acuna committed a reception error, allowing the Lady Altas to finish the game in their favor off Rosal’s service winner.

“Itong game namin ngayon, kumpara sa San Sebastian, unti-unti kaming nag-iimprove,” said Lady Altas coach Macky Cariño.

Umandal contributed three of the Lady Altas’ 14 blocks.

The Lady Pirates dropped behind at 0-3, with teammates Alexandra Rafael, Ciamelle Wanta and Joy Onofre hitting 15 points each.

In men’s play, Louie Ramirez had 23 points, while Ronniel Ramirez added 15 as reigning champion Perpetual Help scored a quick 25-22, 31-29, 25-20 win over Lyceum to emerge unbeaten in three outings.

Kirth Rosos had 10 points to lead juniors’ titleholder Perpetual Help in sweeping LPU, 25-17, 25-17, 25-15 for a 3-0 mark.
