Streaming platform giant, Netflix, has revealed its end of year list for the Philippines. While the list is dominated by foreign titles, three local movies emerged as hit among local patrons.

Netflix’s Original 6 Underground is this year’s most-watched title in the country. The action-thriller is directed by Michael Bay and written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. It stars Ryan Reynolds, Mélanie Laurent, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Adria Arjona, Corey Hawkins, Ben Hardy, and Dave Franco.

Next on the list is Murder Mystery. Directed by Kyle Newacheck and written by James Vanderbilt, the comedy-mystery film was released on the platform in June 2019. It stars Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, and Luke Evans, and follows a married couple who are caught up in a murder investigation on a billionaire’s yacht.

Filipino movies such as Mikhail Red’s Eerie, Viva Films’ Miss Granny, and Ang Babaeng Allergic sa Wifi rank among the most popular movie titles in the country.

Eerie, starring Bea Alonzo and Charo Santos-Concio, is the most popular local title on Netflix. The film, produced by Star Cinema in partnership with mm2 Entertainment in Singapore, was first released in the city-state as a premiere during the Singapore International Film Festival.

Miss Granny ranks fourth on the list, following The Perfect Date (starring Internet’s boyfriend Noah Centineo and Laura Marano) in no. 4.

The local adaptation of the hit South Korean blockbuster stars pop queen Sarah Geronimo with Nova Villa, James Reid and Xian Lim.

The film, which was the second most talked about Filipino feature of 2018 on Twitter, only behind the reigning highest-grossing Filipino film of all-time The Hows of Us, earned Sarah G her second best actress award.

Ang Babaeng Allergic sa Wifi, about an internet-obsessed teen who develops a rare illness that forces her to move to a remote town where she must navigate her relationships without technology, ranks at no. 9 trailing behind The Silence, Isn’t It Romantic, and Always Be My Maybe.

The Sue Ramirez starrer film directed by Jun Lana is followed by Secret Obsession that rounds up the Top 10.

Meanwhile, The Witcher dominated the most popular series for 2019. The Filipinos’ love for Korean titles is further validated by the inclusion of Hotel Del Luna, Kingdom, and Love Alarm to the most popular series list for 2019.

Several other fan-favorite Netflix Original Series such as Umbrella Academy, Sex Education, and Stranger Things also made it to this year’s list.

This year’s lineup of top titles shows the quality, diversity, and variety of entertainment choices that Filipinos enjoyed on Netflix in 2019, from Filipino to Hollywood and Korean movies and shows, and across multiple genres including sci-fi fantasies, live-action, romantic comedies and more.

These lists are ranked by the number of accounts choosing to watch at least two minutes of a series, movie or special during its first 28 days on Netflix in 2019. For series, Netflix counts only the most popular season. At least two minutes is the same way Netflix calculates its daily Top 10 lists in the UK and Mexico – and similar to the way in which the BBC compiles its iPlayer rankings.
