Senator Grace Poe, chairman of the Senate public services committee, on Wednesday assured Iloilo residents of an effective delivery of electricity once a new electric company was given franchise to distribute power supply.

After the public hearing and technical working group deliberations, Poe said they have recommended to give franchise to Monte Oro Resources and Energy or MORE.

“We ’ve had already a few hearings and there were many complaints that PECO failed to give good services and their assets did not improve and even the distribution which triggered several brownouts. They have also been exacting high costs which were not appropriate,” related Poe.

Poe also noted that the Senate would support the House of Representatives’ approval of giving franchise to MORE to provide electricity in Iloilo.

She also said they found that MORE was very much capable of providing and supplying the electricity needed by the place.

She said they had thoroughly scrutinized the capacity of MORE as a new electric company and found that it had sufficient capital, experience, and capabiltiy to be the new power distributor in Iloilo City.

She said they also considered all concerns and even the recommendations of the Iloilo chamber before deciding on endorsing to give MORE congressional franchise.

According to Poe, her primary concern and those of many others was that Iloilo would not suffer from power outages once MORE took over as its power distributor.

Poe said they also consulted the Energy Regulatory Commission, the Department of Energy and other concerned agencies of the government to ensure a seamless transition.

During the takeover, she said MORE should be able to cooperate with PECO and MORE should have in their board, independent directors and board members to guarantee the welfare of Iloilo residents.

The franchise of Panay Electric Company, which is currently providing the electricity need of Iloilo,  is set to expire on January 29 next year.

But the  House did not renew its franchise due to various issues and complaints hounding the said electric company.
