Senior citizens or persons more than 60 years old will be exempted from the color coding scheme and parking fees in Manila, according to Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada.

Estrada said the new policy, which will be implemented soon, is part of the city government’s way of giving back to the elderly persons what they contributed during their active years.

“The council and I have agreed that elderly, who are 60 years old and above be exempted from parking charges and exemption from color coding scheme,” Estrada said.

However, the new policy will only be applied to residents of Manila, while those living outside Manila are not exempted, he said.

“Our senior citizens have contributed to our society during the prime of their lives. They have sacrificed much so that we may now enjoy the fruits of their labors,” Estrada added.

Senior citizens who are residents of Manila are now entitled to free movies every Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays in any movie house in the city.

Estrada also said that the city government will implement an ordinance that will order all establishments and malls in Manila to give free parking for all senior citizens.

“We must reward our elderly and this ordinance shall further give the enjoyment in their twilight years,” Estrada said.

Since February 2017, Manila city senior citizens were entitled to free medical and services and other laboratory test in all city operated hospitals and health care facilities.

According to Manila Health Department chief Dr. Benjamin Yson, for this year alone, the city government has appropriated P70 million for free maintenance medicines.

A sick and indigent elderly can get P3,000 worth of maintenance medicines for one month, and other services like free regular physical examination, cardiac stress test, endoscopy and the like.

Efren Manangan, Office for Senior Citizens Affairs head, said that as of December 2017, Manila has 145,830 registered senior citizens, 20 percent or 29,166 of which are diagnosed and are required to be given constant medication for their sicknesses.

Other benefits given to senior citizens are: birthday cash gift of P500; an annual P6,000 social pension from NCR DSWD in coordination with the city government.

Also a P100,000 cash gift is awarded to a citizen who has reached the age of 100 or more.

Manangan said 47 centenarians have already received the P100,000 cash gift from the city government.
