Smart initially offered unlimited data for Pokémon GO, a GPS-based augmented reality mobile game, for seven days starting Aug. 8.

Players explored the five Pokestops at SM MOA seeking Dragonite and other prized Pokémon to add to their collections. Pokémon is short for “Pocket Monsters.”

Developed by Niantic Labs in partnership with Nintendo affiliate The Pokemon Company, Pokemon GO has swept gamers since it was first launched in the United States, Australia and New Zealand since July 6. The game is now available in over 30 countries, including Japan, where the original Pokemon game and anime series originated.

The franchise started in a gaming magazine called Game Freak in the early 1980s in Japan. Pokémon was created by writer Satoshi Tajiri and illustrator Ken Sugimori.

The Pokémon franchise debuted in 1996 on the Game Boy in Japan. Pocket Monsters: Red and Green was a very basic Japanese role-playing game. You play as a Pokémon trainer traveling the world and collecting the little monsters (inspired by Tajiri’s childhood love for insect collection) and training them in battles with other Pokémon.

Cathy Bernardo, 28, played Pokémon when she was a child. Now, she’s an avid Pokémon GO player.

“I’m just happy Smart has free unlimited data for playing because that’s what I usually do during lunch break,” said Bernardo, who has a Smart prepaid account.

“I love how Smart’s signal is strong everywhere so I can play whenever and wherever I want to,” she added.

Tricia went to SM MOA with her mother Jane for the Pokémon Lure Party with the intention of using her mom’s Smart postpaid line as a hotspot.

“I’m very thankful for Smart because I got GIGASURF50 for free for the Pokémon Lure Party. Now, my mother wants me to teach her how to play,” said Tricia.

Augmented reality is a technology that combines the real world with digital information. For example, you can overlay 3D pictures or videos of Pokémons on the images of people on a real-time basis.

“Smart subscribers nationwide can look forward to more special treats and promos that will allow them to make the most of their Pokemon GO experience,” said Kathy C. Carag, Smart Mobile Business Head.

Smart and TNT subscribers can easily level up their gameplay via convenient and secure Pokémon GO in-app purchases even without a credit card.

With Smart’s Google Direct Carrier Billing for Android users, subscribers can easily purchase Pokecoins, Pokémon GO’s currency mainly used for buying items that will help gamers catch Pokémon-directly charged to their prepaid load or postpaid account.

Smart Postpaid subscribers who are iPhone users can buy Pokecoins and charge it to their monthly billing, through Smart’s Pay-With-Mobile service.
