Combining function and design in furniture

Furniture trends come and go, with each one leaving a relevant impact on the public. In recent years, Nordic style furniture captured the attention and affection of homeowners because of its simple yet sleek design and overall functionality.

Nordic furniture originated from the Northern part of Europe, or what’s known as Scandinavia, composed of the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. As the point of origin, Nordic-style furniture existed for years in the region and continued to do so. It was only recently that this aesthetic experienced a sudden rise in popularity.

A possible factor that contributed to this recognition is admiration for minimalism. Both Nordic and minimalism styles feature clean lines, neutral tones, and an airy vibe that makes any space feel roomy and organized. Ultimately, they follow the idea that less is more.

Nordic-style cabinets come in different shapes and sizes. They also feature other compartments such as drawers, open storage cubbies, closed cabinets, and more where homeowners can display their favorite room accents or keep their belongings.

Highlight a room’s function by putting large pieces of furniture as the focal point

Meanwhile, Scandinavian tables don’t need intricate designs to help them stand out in any space. Whether it’s the dining area, living room, or office spaces, this muted piece of furniture commands attention through its sturdy material, unique structure, and natural colors.

Chairs also share this same concept. No matter its function, it’s always made with durable materials accentuated with patterned fabrics, eccentric structures, and more. Nonetheless, they offer both comfort and style to any area.

Scandinavian homes feature simple and natural pieces of furniture

Despite the popularity of Nordic-style furniture and the rising number of people who want to transform their homes into Scandinavian-inspired ones, others have trouble adapting to this new aesthetic. It’s within good reason, as the public spent decades exposed to home styles and decor that rely on bright colors, loud patterns, and intricate designs to make areas stand out.

Switching to a Nordic-style home isn’t as complicated as one thinks. It all begins with the color, and subdued tones are the ideal hues to imbibe the Nordic aesthetic. Some good examples are pastels and neutrals. These colors will serve as the backdrop of any space and highlight the furniture adorning it.

Use subdued tones and embrace negative space to create a Nordic vibe

However, Scandinavian homes are warm and inviting, not stark or cold like most minimalist designs. Add patterned or vibrant fabrics to a room to make them more welcoming.

Another thing to consider when redecorating a home with Nordic furniture is to choose pieces with clean lines. It’s significant to remember that such pieces feature simple silhouettes and natural materials. Once that’s been determined, the next step is to find its proper placement. For large pieces like comfortable seats, a dining table, or a bed, put them at the center of the room so that it immediately draws the attention of whoever enters the area.

Lastly, embrace negative space. Since Scandinavian homes follow a simplistic lifestyle, it’s no surprise if there are bare walls or empty spaces now and then. Their goal is to highlight the function of the room, and one way to do that is to remove unnecessary clutter that might say otherwise.

With more people switching to Nordic-style furniture, they’re also beginning to realize the beauty of simplicity and letting a space fulfill its purpose.
