My Furry Bestie

This corner features pets of animal lovers every week. We hope new owners and those thinking of getting a pet will be encouraged to be responsible “furparents” through these features. We also hope more people will be moved to be kind to animals when they read about the great relationship that can be created between humans and animals.

For contributions, please email to [email protected] and put My Furry Bestie as subject.

ELY, a two-month-old care-tzu (a cairn terrier and shih tzu mix), is simply family to Mary Joy Dioquino and her human loved ones.

“We got Ely on March 10, 2019, my mom’s birthday. Actually, he was not the first choice, the Japanese spitz was,” Mary Joy says.

She adds: “But since he captured the heart of my eldest daughter, Kane and her boyfriend, Jeth, we ended up getting him instead.”

Mary Joy shares that when they took home Ely, he was so quiet and behaved.

“But after an hour or so, he started roaming around the house as if he actually lived there. He started to feel at home and at ease with our company. He started sniffing and lying down at our feet trying to get our attention. It’s been only days since we got him and yet he has already become part of the family,” Mary Joy says.

The best part of having Ely, Mary Joy says, is the loyalty and devotion Ely shows her everyday.

“Every morning when I wake up, he is already waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs. Sometimes he comes up to greet me with his tail waving back and forth, always excited to see me, “ she says.

She also shares: “There was a time when I took him inside my room and as I lay down to take a nap, he laid beside me, put his head on my arms and slept soundly. I was so amazed with what he did that I ended up watching him sleep peacefully like a baby.”

“Ely is not just a dog to us. He is more than just a friend, a buddy, a playmate and stress reliever… Ely is family, “ Mary Joy says.

SAMSAM is the baby of the family, says Resie Rebulos.

“She is makulit, eats a lot, snobbish to other people, and sometimes starts the chewing of slippers so the other dogs follow suit. They have destroyed so many slippers, “ Resie says.

Resie adds: “She was born in March 2017 but she was given to us on May 1, 2017.  We thought she would not live because she was so emaciated and had so many wounds then. We were told the former owner was not feeding her well.”

But after giving Samsam good food and treating her wounds, she became healthy and her wounds disappeared.

She also became frenemies with Bodi, Resie’s other dog.

“Best friend/best enemy ni Bodi. After growling at each other, they will play, “ Resie shares.

When she is brought out of the house, Samsam is like a “road runner,” who runs so fast and is “so hyper,” Resie says.

“We watch her to make sure she is always safe and the humans around her are safe too, “ Resie says.

Samsam  is a sweet girl who loves to be kissed on the nose. But she will ask that you carry her before you can kiss her, Resie says.

She also won’t finish her food until  Bodi has eaten. She is always waiting for Bodi’s leftover. She would eat Bodi’s leftover first. “Wais siya (She is wise.), “ adds Resie.

Samsam loves to sleep beside them as she is jumpy when she hears a loud noise, Resie says.

Both Samsam and Bodi love apples. (Editor’s note: When giving apples to dogs, please remove the core and the skin which are poisonous to dogs.)
