Planning on giving your living space an update? A fresh coat of paint in this year’s trending colors might just do the trick.

Nippon Paint (Coatings) Philippines recently introduced the nine colors that are set to trend across Asia in 2016. The colors, which are grouped into three palettes, were curated and handpicked by 50 Asian design professionals, color experts, and enthusiasts from China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines during the Asia Pacific Chroma Zone Color Forecasting Workshop 2015 held in Japan.

According to color expert Serene Pang, the colors are chosen based on political, economic, social and natural factors. “This year, the Asian palettes were mainly influenced by technology, nature, and the individual spirit,” says Pang.

Connected Culture

The first palette called “We Are One” features modern colors that exhibit our current culture which is connected by technology and social media. The series includes Founder Blue, Gray Knight and Green Tuft.

Representing the “social side,” Founder Blue is associated with depth and stability, and symbolizes trust and loyalty. The inviting vibe of this color makes it an ideal wall color in living room, bedroom and dining room. Experts suggest painting it on white walls in stripes or other geometric shapes to create dramatic designs, while Ben Cheng Ki Pan of Golden Furniture in Hong Kong recommends using it as accent like a television feature wall.

The neutral Gray Knight exudes mysteriousness and encourages exploration making it the perfect blank canvas as you add more hues to your home. Nippon Paint Malaysia Group offers to use this color on floors, ceilings and the house’s facade for a contemporary look. It’s also suitable for the dining room and bedroom.

Green Tuft ushers in freshness and a sense of renewal with it being the most restful color for the human eye. Use it in study corners to trigger fresh ideas, as well as children’s rooms and the dining room.

Back to Nature

The second theme “New Eco” aims to transport us back to basics with stylish colors that represent and celebrate Mother Earth. The featured tones in this palette are Tavern Buff, Lush and Volcanic Black.

A mellow yellow that evokes a rustic and vintage feel, Tavern Buff is a neutral shade close to the colors of the natural landscape. This versatile hue is suitable for any room in the house where you want to inject a relaxing and warm ambiance. It’s also ideal as exterior paint to create a seamless effect that blends with the surroundings outside.

Lush, meanwhile, reflects the vibrant color of the ocean and sky therefore offering a sense of tranquility and calming effect. Soothing tones like this color works well with neutral backgrounds, and is perfect, according to Mark Wee of Ong & Ong Singapore, for bedrooms as it encourages relaxation.

A solid and earthy color, Volcanic Black is a dramatic hue that is suitable for feature walls. Experts suggest pairing this dark shade with bright colors in the dining area for a cheerful and contemporary look.

The Perfect Balance

“Wonder-Lust” color palette embodies the perfect balance one strives to achieve in life through the  exploration of new interests and hobbies. Vibrant hues that include Being Peach, Blue Lullaby and Fast Car, make up this inspired series.

Being Peach radiates spontaneity, positivity and youthfulness. This statement color, which best exemplifies new adventures, is ideal for accent walls that add cheerful vibe to any space. Architect Jose Ramon Carunungan of Carunungan & Partner Co. suggests using this hue in study rooms to encourage a pleasant and energized working experience.

Striking a balance between our personal and professional lives is Blue Lullaby. This calming shade is the ideal color for cozy corners in the house such as the bedroom and living room to promote relaxation. When paired with neutral hues, it offers a more nurturing atmosphere, something that you’d want for the children’s room, for instance.

The intense color of Fast Car can be associated with danger, passion, desire and determination. The boldness of this shade makes it ideal for feature walls or accent elements. Add a pop of color to walls in earthy shades for an eye-catching effect. It can be used in the kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom.

“Nippon Paint’s Trend Beyond Colors 2016/17 captures the region’s essence, from its beautiful landscape to its increasingly connected people driven by technology. Essentially, the Trend Beyond Colors selection makes it easier for consumers to create their own masterpieces – with a little more vibrancy,” remarks  Nippon Paint Philippines general manager Michael Chung.
