Face masks: Do they work?

Sheet face masks are probably South Korea’s most globally popular beauty exports next to the BB cream. Their appeal is obvious: using them give you the feeling that you are pampering yourself without spending a lot of money. I read somehow that face masks are considered the “broke girl’s facial.”

My first sheet face masks were from The Face Shop. I would buy a bunch of them every payday and used them at least twice a day.

Face masks from Innisfree

I stopped using sheet masks because I became too busy to go to the stores to purchase them. Then, my editor (and best friend) gave me a bunch after she went to Korea. Every time she would go, she’d bring me some from Tony Moly.

The sheet mask is individually wrapped and soaked in serum. Every mask targets a specific concern like clarity, firmness and hydration.

To apply a sheet mask, you open the package, unfold the sheet, and lay it on your face. You normally leave it on for 15 to 30 minutes but you can actually sleep with it on your face. The excess serum from the packet is what I would apply on my neck and hands.

Every Korean beauty brand has a range of skin masks. Even the Western makeup brands have embraced it, just like they did the BB cream.

So are these sheet masks effective?

From experience, some have been found to be more effective than others. Some of the masks get rid of acne overnight. Others address your skin concerns after several uses. But most of them work and they are quite mild on the skin. I have yet to find a face mask that makes me break out or irritates my skin.
