Tacloban City—The provincial government of Northern Samar has intensified its drive on the mandatory wearing of face masks and other protective equipment following the latest spike in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the province.

Governor Edwin Ongchuan warned of immediate arrest, blotter report, and fines for government employees or officials who violate their protocol.

In the island town of Biri alone, 14 persons were arrested for not wearing face masks and face shields in Barangay Poblacion on November 12.

“Our ordinances are intended to prevent further spread of the Covid-19. I’m appealing to everyone to abide by the rules so that they will not be in trouble since this is for their health safety,” said Lieutenant Mae Ann Erivera, officer in charge of Biri Municipal Police Station.

According to Erivera, the violators of the localized general community quarantine (GCQ) protocols were informed of the nature and cause of their apprehension.

“After which, they were processed at the Biri Municipal Police Station, rendered community service, and underwent awareness lecture as a penalty for first-time offenders,” the police official said.

She also warned authorities will not hesitate to arrest violators of quarantine protocols.

As of November 13, Northern Samar logged 39 new cases, bringing the total COVID-19 confirmed cases of the province to 965, with 539 total recoveries, 11 deaths, and 415 active cases.

This brings the total active cases in the region to 687 (8.83%).
