Blood packs are regularly used in hospitals. In 2016, the blood centers in the Philippines collected 920,000 unit but this is not enough to fulfill the country’s needs. The World Health Organization estimates that 1 percent of a country’s total population needs to donate blood in order to have enough supply. This is why blood donation drives are crucial as it helps replenish the stockpile of blood in blood banks everywhere.

Quezon City 4th District Councilor Hero Bautista has been holding regular blood donation events to help boost the LGU’s blood supply. The councilor and his staff’s most recent bloodletting event was held at Dr. Josefa Jara Martinez High School in Tatalon, Quezon City in coordination with Irene Canon of the Office of the Principal.

Quezon City 4th District Councilor Hero Bautista (seated right, in grey shirt) attends to blood donors of the Dugong Alay Dugtong Buhay program.

Over 115 people volunteered, including members of the Alpha Kappa Rho Fraternity and Tau Gamma Phi. Tondo Medical Center nurses oversaw the blood collection. LGU officials also attended to assist in the event. Program partner Nap Marilag of  Founder ng DUGONG ALAY DUGTONG BUHAY., Brgy Captain Rodel Lobo,  Kagawads Reynate Manalo and Victor Del Rosario, and Brgy. Tatalon Purok Leader Eusie Antonio.

“This program is a big help to the community. This is why we do this monthly in the different barangays in our district. The blood collected here will be used for blood unit assistance for financially-distressed patients who need blood for their medical procedures and hospitalization,” Councilor Bautista shared.
