The City Government of Navotas has released P2.76 million for the allowance of last year’s NavotaAs Scholarship Program beneficiaries.

Some 334 academic, art, athletic and fisherfolk scholars got up to six months’ worth of allowance.

Recipients of merit scholarship received P15,600; Navotas Polytechnic College, P3,900; high school, P4,950; and teachers, P3,000 for the months of January to March.

Art scholars received P9,900; athletic, P11,400; and fisherfolk, P4,950, for their January to June stipend.

“Providing quality education in this time of pandemic is a challenge. Thankfully, we are ready following the launching of our NavoSchool-in-a-box and modified modular distance learning. We hope the allowance our scholars received will help them secure whatever they need once classes start,” Mayor Toby Tiangco said.

“The Department of Education has extended the enrolment to July 15. We encourage all students to enroll. Let us ensure that our children continue to earn quality education despite COVID-19,” he added.

The city government established the NavotaAs Scholarship Program in 2011. The program initially covered students who excelled in academics and teachers who wanted to pursue graduate studies.

In 2016, the program opened for students who competed and won in sports competitions. In 2017, the scholarship included students who excelled in visual arts, music, dancing, theatre arts, and creative writing or journalism.

A year after, children or relatives of Top Ten Outstanding Fisherfolk were also added to the program.
