Lani tops Taguig House poll

Taguig City Mayor Laarni “Lani” Cayetano is the leading candidate in the race to represent the city’s 2nd district in the House of Representatives in the coming midterm elections.

Based on Pulse Asia Research survey conducted from Jan. 20 to 26, 2019, Cayetano got 81-percent voter preference against the 11 percent of her rival, former city councilor Che Che Gonzales.

Respondents of the survey were asked who they would vote for Taguig 2nd District Representative if the elections were held today.

The results dovetail with another survey, conducted by the RP Mission and Development Foundation Inc. from Feb. 1 to 10, that saw most voters in Metro Manila preferring reelectionists or incumbent local chief executives for the May 13 elections.

The noncommissioned survey, conducted from Feb. 1 to 10 and covering 2,500 respondents in the National Capital Region, saw Mayor Cayetano’s brother-in-law, movie director and former congressman Lino Cayetano, get 75 percent in the survey for mayor against rival Taguig-Pateros Rep. Arnel Cerafica, who got only 17 percent.

Lani Cayetano, who is on her third and final term as mayor of Taguig, filed her certificate of candidacy for congressman under the banner of Nacionalista Party.

The wife of former senator and Foreign Affairs secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, Lani won the mayoralty race in 2010 against Dante Tinga, father of then-incumbent Sigfrido “Freddie” Tinga, who served as Taguig mayor for three terms.

In the next elections in 2013, Lani Cayetano won against Rica Tinga, daughter of Dante Tinga. Three years later, she ran for Taguig mayor unopposed.

Cayetano’s rival this year, Gonzales, lost to the mayor’s sister-in-law, Pia Cayetano, in 2016 for Taguig’s 2nd district seat in the House of Representatives.

A petition was filed to disqualify Pia Cayetano in the 2016 elections for alleged lack of residency in the district. A petition to disqualify for lack of residency was also filed against Lino Cayetano in 2013 when he ran for the same position. Both cases were dismissed by Comelec.

A similar disqualification case for the May 2019 elections has been filed against Lani Cayetano. The Commission on Elections has yet to decide on the case.

The results in the RP Mission “Halalan 2019 Survey” showed incumbent mayors Bobby Eusebio of Pasig City (75 percent), Abigail Binay of Makati City (70 percent), Imelda Aguilar (68 percent) of Las Piñas City, Jaime Fresnedi (65 percent) of Muntinlupa City, and Miguel Ponce III (55 percent) of Pateros getting majority preference among the electorate in their cities.

Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte, daughter of former city mayor and House Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte Jr., is the top choice for Quezon City mayor with 72 percent over Rep. Vincent “Bingbong” Crisologo with only 18 percent.

The other leading candidates for mayor in Metro Manila, based on the RP Mission survey, were Toby Tiangco (56 percent) for Navotas City, Oscar Malapitan (90 percent) in Caloocan City, Rex Gatchalian (95 percent) in Valenzuela City, Francis Zamora (48 percent) in San Juan, Carmelita Abalos (86 percent) in Mandaluyong City, and Antolin “Lenlen” Oreta III (52 percent) in Malabon City.

Former Manila vice mayor Isko Moreno, meanwhile, garnered 45 percent in the survey against incumbent Mayor Joseph Estrada (26 percent) and former mayor Alfredo Lim (24 percent) in the three-way fight for the capital’s top seat.

It’s a relative toss-up in Parañaque City, where incumbent mayor Edwin Olivarez (43 percent) got most of the survey votes over his predecessor, Florencio Bernabe Jr. with 15 percent.

Pasay City Rep. Imelda Calixto-Rubiano, sister of current Mayor Antonino Calixto, leads with 53 percent over Chet Cuneta, brother of actress Sharon Cuneta, who got 16 percent in the survey.
