Quezon City to open new dump by 2018

With the looming closure of its Payatas controlled landfill, the Quezon City government vowed on Tuesday to operate a new garbage dump by January 2018.

In an interview, city administrator Aldrin Cuña said the city’s Environmental Protection and Wastes Management Department is doing its best to look for a new site where the city’s 2,800 metric tons of garbage a day could be disposed of, and to beat its self-imposed deadline to operate a new one next year.

“We are looking for a site. Of course, we hope that before December, we could be able to find one so that we could soon start with the bidding process,” he told the Manila Standard. “We have to make sure that we will have a [new] landfill.”

Last July 27, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources ordered the closure of Payatas controlled landfill.

The city’s EPWMD, headed by Frederika Rentoy, requested the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority to reopen the dump, to no avail.

During the dump’s closure, the MMDA recommended that QC’s collected garbage from Districts 1, 3 and 4 be disposed at Vitas, Tondo in Manila, and refuse from Districts 2, 5 and 6 to Rodriguez, Rizal.

On July 10, 2000, more than 300 people were buried alive when a 21-foot pile of garbage collapsed in Payatas.
