Navoteño parents are now assured their kids will only get healthy food from school canteens, following the city’s implementation of the Department of Education Order 13 series of 2017.

The Navotas Schools Division Office held a forum for principals, canteen managers, and clinic teachers on the Policy and Guidelines on Healthy Food and Beverages in Schools.

Mayor John Rey Tiangco expressed support for the policy, saying it helps secure the health of young Navoteños.

“It has been our goal to require schools to prepare only healthy food for our students. We are grateful that DepEd shares and supports our advocacy,” Tiangco said.

Under the mayor’s direction, Avot John, the official mascot of Navotas, visited all public elementary schools to promote healthy lifestyle to Navoteño students.

Based on studies, 79.7 percent of Filipino children nationwide aged five to 10 are malnourished, prompting the intensified campaign for the provision of balanced and healthy food in schools.

According to the DepEd order, school canteens will limit their preparation of foods high in fat and sugar, and ensure that students are provided with a complete mix of go, grow, and glow foods.

“We need to secure the well-being of our children and ensure that they eat food that are healthy and good for them,” Tiangco added.
