DAVAO CITY—The City Council has approved a memorandum of agreement among San Miguel Corp., the National Housing Authority and the city government to build 5,000 houses to be distributed to indigent city residents.

Councilor Bernard Al-ag, the majority floor leader, said the council approved the resolution backing the MOA on its third and final reading, and is now ready to be implemented.

Al-Ag said San Miguel will finance the project, the NHA will implement it and the city government will provide the lots for the houses.

The city will also provide the list of the beneficiaries of the housing project, Al-ag said,

“We already identified the area for the construction of the houses. We still have Los Amigos in Tugbok that serves as the relocation area of the Davaoeños, and the one in Tibungco in the northern part of the city,” the councilor said.

“We will prioritize those Davaoeños who were living near danger zones, and those who will be affected by the opening of [new city] roads,” he added.

Al-ag said some city streets were occupied by informal settlers, and the city government is looking to reopen those areas to give way to other city projects.

He stressed the beneficiaries would pay P500 or less monthly for about 20 years as their counterpart funding for the project.

Meanwhile, the city will also continue construction of a previous P20-million NHA project left by the previous Aquino administration.

Al-ag said the NHA will fund the remaining 200 houses still to be built in Los Amigos, Tugbok district, while the city will take charge of the project’s construction. Davaoeá¹…os have already occupied the first 200 units under the project.

A single unit will cost P130,000, P100,000 of which will be allocated for its construction materials, while the remaining P30,000 is for the labor cost for each house. The councilor said the City Housing Department is currently looking for the manpower to build the houses.
