For the Municipality of Taytay, improving ease of doing business need not be as costly as many thought it is, and for delivering results for less, the locality landed on the illustrious list of the country’s most competitive local government units.

In the recently conducted search for the Most Competitive Municipality [first- and second-class towns category], Taytay was named the second over-all from a list of 1,480 municipalities in the archipelago.

During the 8th Regional Competitiveness Summit, the National Competitiveness Council (NCC) disclosed the annual results of the 2020 Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index (CMCI) that saw Taytay, Rizal among those that achieved competitive advantage and inclusive growth in the country through its full participation in improving ease and cost of doing business, governance, and business environment.

Taytay LGU received sterling grades in the Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index, which measured competitiveness at the local government level using 28 indicators grouped into three equally weighted pillars: Economic Dynamism, Government Efficiency, and Infrastructure. Scores on each pillar were combined to form the overall score used to rank cities and municipalities.

Out of 1,488 municipalities, Taytay notched the second highest score, while Antipolo City and Rizal Province won the top awards in their respective categories.

In a statement, Taytay Mayor Joric Gacula cited the Department of Trade and Industry, the Board of Investments, the National Economic Development Authority for acknowledging their hard work in imposing measures which proved effective in easing doing business in their locality as reflected in the influx of investments in the municipality known as the “Garments Capital of the Philippines.”

“True enough, knowing the true measure of competitiveness will attract businessmen and investors. And we’re glad to have been measured by these agencies. Now we are 100 percent sure we are doing the right thing and headed to the right direction,” Gacula said.

At the 8th Regional Competitive Conference, top national government officials highlighted the significant contribution of the LGUs to the national economy. They also underscored the role of government agencies at different levels as well as the role of private sectors and development partners in contributing to inclusive growth in the country.

The results highlight the importance of being competitive in several factors, especially those which are closely examined by potential investors, who are particularly keen on the data in the form of economic indicators about places where they intend to put up business.

“We are so happy with the results. We just made sure that we were able to gather all the data and the most important is that we transform this data into something significant for the people. We will have to sustain this by preparing and enhancing more our work in Taytay. And one thing is for sure, we will try to live up with the people’s expectations from us,” Gacula concluded.
