Meralco sees power outages next month

Manila Electric Co. warned that supply to the Luzon grid in October will fall short of some 600 megawatts to 900 megawatts because of the scheduled maintenance of two production facilities.

Meralco data showed one of the gas plants, a unit of the 1,200-MW Ilijan plant in Batangas, will be on maintenance outage during the first week of October.

“We have alerted the DOE already that there are scheduled outages already in October, as early as the first week… There are several plants that will have their scheduled maintenance. We just have to be careful that the supply is there,” Meralco president and chief executive officer Ray Espinosa said.

The Malampaya gas field in northwest Palawan is also set to go on scheduled maintenance shutdown on Oct. 12 to 15.

Mario Marasigan, director of the department’s Electric Power Industry Bureau, assured that contingency measures had been put in place to ensure adequate power supply during the Malampaya gas field shutdown.
