The country's two largest telecom companies are aggressively expanding their 5G network nationwide.
Globe Telecom Inc. said Monday some 1,068 areas across the country now have 5G technology owing to its aggressive network builds and site upgrades.
It said that as of January 2021, Globe's 5G coverage was present across 848 locations in Metro Manila and Rizal; and in 221 areas in the Visayas and Mindanao.
“We want our customers to unlock the many possibilities and potential that 5G technology brings. Getting the 5G service to more customers supports our vision of empowering Filipinos to create the quality of lives they want,” said Globe president and chief executive Ernest Cu.
The latest in wireless technology, 5G promises faster speeds, higher bandwidth and more stable internet connection compared to 4G.
In the Visayas, 5G is now accessible in several areas in Negros Occidental, Cebu, Iloilo and in Aklan.
The technology is also available in some areas in Misamis Oriental and Davao del Sur. In South Luzon, 5G is present in selected locations in Laguna and Bulacan.
Meanwhile, Smart Communications Inc. said it ramped up the rollout of its 5G network across the country and teamed up with device manufacturers to make 5G devices more accessible to customers.
The wireless arm of the country's largest integrated telco PLDT said it tapped device manufacturers like Samsung, Huawei, OPPO, Vivo and Realme to put more Smart-certified 5G devices within easy reach of subscribers.
With Smart 5G's superfast speeds and lower latency, customers can enjoy an enhanced experience in terms of watching high-definition video, playing e-sports and using new digital services, it said.
"In addition to being in an area with 5G coverage, unlocking the full potential of the 5G network that we are putting in place across the country also entails using the appropriate device," said Mario Tamayo, head of technology at PLDT and Smart.
"As the network evolves, so do the devices that can maximize it," Tamayo said.
