The phenomenal growth of Philippine e-commerce prompted the Department of Trade and Industry to strive to increase the value of the industry to as much P1.2 trillion by 2022, or about 5.5 percent of the economy.

Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez during the launch of the E-commerce Roadmap Friday put the estimated value of e-commerce in 2021 at P850 billion, or 4.3 percent of the country’s gross domestic product.

“We need to take advantage of how the pandemic has boosted e-commerce in the Philippines, given that people now accept the digital life as the “New Normal.” We are confident that the new e-Commerce Roadmap will help us in this regard,” he said.

The DTI is optimistic the number of e-commerce enterprises would increase to 750,000 by 2021 and 1 million by 2022 from 500,000 in 2020.

Lopez noted the significant increase in the number of online sellers that registered with the Business Name Registration System of the DTI in 2020.
