The country’s declining garments and textile exports has given rise to the creation of a roadmap that will refocus the industry’s resources and talent pool to enable it to compete in the region.

Board of Investments Assistant Secretary Ma. Corazon Dichosa said her industry development group was reviewing the final draft of the roadmap pending the input of private sector and the academe.

“This should have been launched earlier but certain matters led to the delay but we are now prepared to present the roadmap,” she said Wednesday at the sidelines of the pre-event briefing for the Philippine Garment, Leather Industries and Textile Expo 2019 held at the BOI office in Makati City.

From a $3-billion industry in 2005, the garments and textile industry’s export value consistently declined to $1.3 billion in 2018.Imports last year amounted to $1.4 billion.

Garment imports in the first nine months of 2019 reached $476 million while textile imports hit $1 billion. Textile fiber imports amounted to $160 million.
