MerryMart, the supermarket chain led by businessman Edgar Sia II, is now open for franchising as a part of its plan to have 1,200 branches nationwide with P120 billion in systemwide sales by 2030.

MerryMart said in a statement it signed its first franchise agreement for a MerryMart Store in Mambusao Sigma Road in Capiz province.

The first MerryMart franchisee, Arturo Oñas is also the first franchisee of Mang Inasal, a restaurant chain which Sia sold to Jollibee Foods Corp.

“I immediately reached out to MerryMart to apply for a franchise because I know this will again become a highly successful venture. I can still remember when I applied for a Mang Inasal franchise early on about 12 years ago and became the first franchisee of Mang Inasal.  Now, I operate a chain of 23 Mang Inasal franchise stores, and I hope to also grow my MerryMart franchise in the years to come,” said Oñas.

Sia said MerryMart’s decision to open its business to franchising would enable it to take advantage of the group’s know-how in franchising and familiarity of the Philippine market terrain, just like in the rollout of Mang Inasal, CityMall, Hotel101 and CentralHub network.

“We believe this step will further strengthen the market grip of all the industries that our group is involved in,” he said.

MerryMart Store is the household essential store format of the MerryMart Group. The concept of a MerryMart Store combines the mini grocery, pharmacy and health and beauty lines with average store size of about 250 square meters.

The 3-in-1 innovation and expansion through franchising is expected to bring in operational efficiencies and enable MerryMart to rapidly scale up and build its competitive advantage.

MerryMart said seven branches were being constructed so far.
