IMUS CITY, Cavite—Starting a business during the pandemic is an immense gamble. But for couple Jay and Cindy Saquilayan, taking the risk was worth it. From small savings of P50,000, their Takoyaki business now earns between P150,000 to P170,000 each month.

With hard work, the couple was able to expand the business to 13 branches in just 18 months. They opened their first ‘Saki’ Takoyaki stall in October 2020 in Silang, Cavite.

“My wife [Cindy] had a taste of Takoyaki, then we experimented with mixing, until we learned the preparations. We established a small kiosk in Silang town. The people liked it. We started on Oct. 22,2020. By Dec. 8, 2020, we had our first franchisee,” Jay said in an interview.

‘Saki’ Takoyaki now has branches at Acienda Mall Outlet in Silang, Southwoods Mall in Carmona, SaveMore GMA, Portal Mall Carmona, Paliparan, Trece Martires City, Gen. Trias City, Pasong Buaya, Imus City, Bacoor and Indang.

“At our main branch, we had average daily sales of P7,000 to P8,000 in 2020 to 2021. This year, more restaurants opened, so we have more competitors. Our sales declined to P5,000 a day,” he said.
