National Grid Corp. of the Philippines said Friday it completed the San Jose-Angat 115kV Transmission Line Upgrading Project to secure the reliability of power transmission services in the Luzon grid.

The old San Jose-Angat Lines 1 and 2 were built in 1967 to connect the Angat hydro plant to the Luzon grid, while another circuit, which was composed of wooden poles, was built in 1960.

“The completion of this project affirms our continuing commitment to upgrade the transmission network of the country.

We are happy that the project is now energized to keep the grid running at optimum condition as we create solutionswhich will help our economy grow,” said NGCP.

NGCP said the upgrading of the line was critical to the overall reliability of transmission services for Luzon, as the aged line would not be able to handle the full capacity dispatch of the 246-megawatt hydro power plant.

A new third circuit spanning 18 kilometers was successfully upgraded on May 20. It completed the fourth circuit of the same length on April 13.

NGCP said the 300-MVA capacity per circuit of the upgraded line would provide N-1 contingency, which is the ability of the grid to withstand a major system disturbance with minimal or no impact on the system.

The associated 115kV substation was also upgraded with new power circuit breakers to accommodate the capacity of the two new lines connected to the substation.

The P307-million project, approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission, was certified by the Energy Investment Coordinating Council of the Department of Energy as an energy project of national significance on Jan. 16, 2019.

NGCP, the country’s transmission operator, set its capital expenditure budget at P37.6 billion for 2022.
