DOE endorses 9 power projects for NGCP’s grid impact study

The Department of Energy said Friday it endorsed nine projects to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines for a grid impact study.
The projects include two large offshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 3,000 megawatts.

It endorsed Domhain Earth Corp.’s 1,400-megawatt Calatagan offshore wind farm in Batangas and Occidental Mindoro and the 1,600-MW Claveria offshore wind farm in Cagayan and Ilocos Norte.

The DOE also endorsed San Miguel Electric Corp.s 875-MW Navotas combined cycle gas turbine plant using hybrid fuel with complementary battery energy storage system in Navotas City and two wind projects of Energy Development Corp. in Burgos, Ilocos Norte.

These are the EDC Bayog Burgos Wind Power Corp.’s 60-MW Burgos 1 wind project and EDC Pagali Burgos Wind Power Corp.’s 120-MW Burgos wind project.

Other projects endorsed for grid impact study are Metro Solar Power Solutions Inc.’s 65-MW Pililia solar power project in Pililla, Rizal,; JBD Water Power Inc.’s 49-MW Saltan D hydro project and 45-MW Saltan River Site E hydro project in Kalinga province.
The DOE also granted certificates of endorsement to 22 power projects to the Energy Regulatory Commission.

Mario Marasigan, DOE director for Power Bureau, said the endorsement to the ERC for issuance of a certificate of compliance means the projects are in accordance with the Power Development Plan.

Among the big-ticket projects are the geothermal facilities of Energy Development Corp. in Leyte with a combined capacity of 542 megawatts.
These are Mahanagdong Geothermal Power Plant in Ormoc, Leyte with a capacity of 198.13 MW; Malitbog Geothermal Power Plant in Barangay Tongonan, Kananga, Leyte with 232.614 MW; and Upper Mahiao Geothermal Project in Barangay Lim-ao, Kananga, Leyte with 112 MW.

The department also endorsed the 181.4-MW Makban-Calauan Geothermal Project of Aboitiz-controlled AP Renewables Inc. in Barangay Limao, Calauan, Laguna.

It endorsed the 160-MW Balaoi and Caunayan wind project of Ayala-owned Bayog Wind Power Corp.

The DOE also endorsed five power projects of state-owned National Power Corp. to NGCP. These are mostly small capacity diesel plants such as Talicud diesel power plant in Davao del Norte; Panlaitan diesel plant in Busuanga, Palawan; Debangan diesel plant in Taytay, Palawan; Hilotongan diesel power plant in Bantayan, Cebu; Casian diesel plant in Taytay, Palawan; and Nangalao diesel plant in Linapacan, Palawan.

Other endorsed projects are Petron Corp.’s 44-MW refinery solid fuel-fired boiler (phase 3); Citicore Solar Cebu Inc.’s 60-MW Toledo solar power plant; Citicore Renewable Energy’s 22.32-MW Clark solar project; King Energy Generation Corp.’s 16-MW Misamis Occidental diesel plant; Green Core Power Solutions 3 Inc.’s 72-MW Arayat solar power plant; Maramag Mini-Hydro Power Corp.’s 2-MW hydro project; and Cartingas Mini-Hydro Power Corp.’s 2-MW diesel plant.

Asian Greenergy Corp.’s 10.5-MW Kibawe solar project and Bicol Hydropower Corp.’s 1.6-MW Inanihan hydropower project also received DOE endorsements.

The DOE continues to woo investors to participate in the country’s power sector to secure the country’s long-term power supply needs.
