Four groups have passed the pre-qualification process for the operations and maintenance of the Light Rail Transit Line 2, the Transportation Department said Monday.

The department identified the four groups as Aboitiz Equity Ventures-SMRT Transportation Solutions Consortium, DMCI Consunji Inc.-Tokyo Metro Co. Ltd. Consortium, LRM2 Consortium and San Miguel- Korail Consortium.

“All four interested groups for the LRT-2 O&M project have successfully hurdled the pre-qualification stage, and may now participate in the actual bid, which is targeted for the third quarter of this year,” Transportation Department spokesman Michael Arthur Sagcal said.

Sagcal said the department was pleased to have a competitive number of experienced international rail companies who teamed up with reputable local firms vying for the project, “which is envisioned to deliver world-class services to LRT-2 riders.”

The project will give the winning concessionaire a 10 to 15-year right to operate and maintain the existing 13.8-kilometer line, which traverses the cities of Manila, San Juan, Quezon City, Marikina and Pasig, as well as the 4.2-kilometer extension to Masinag and any future extensions of the rail system.

The department earlier awarded to D.M. Consunji Inc. the contract for the 4.2-kilometer extension of the LRT Line 2 from Santolan in Pasig City to Masinag in Antipolo City with a bid of P2.27 billion.

“Railway modernization entails improving infrastructure and shifting services towards better customer-orientation. Our projects for LRT-2 will make fast, affordable and convenient transportation accessible to residents of the densely-populated parts of Rizal, such as Antipolo and Cainta,” Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya said earlier.

DMCI will have a period of 18 months to complete the civil works for the elevated guideway or viaduct.
