A BRIGHTER future for smartphones and PCs

A recent study shows that a promising future awaits smartphones and PCs as Filipinos’ device usage habits continue to reshape and change the device trends in the country, a leading international research firm said last in a media conference last Thursday.

With their latest report, International Data Corporation states that the smartphone shipments declined by 7% last year while tablets shipments, due to to the lack of practical use cases, have dropped down to 1 million units with 30% year over year.

But with Filipinos’ device habits and continuity of patronizing top brands of smartphones, IDC expects that smartphone sales will rebound this year.

“As mobile content continues to grow, smartphones have become the primary device for basic productivity and everyday media consumption, and this fuels the need for larger screens and higher specs,” said Jensen Ooi, Senior Market Analyst, Client Devices, IDC ASEAN.

As for personal computers, Sean Paul Agapito, Associate Market Analyst, Client Devices, IDC Philippines, said that desktops and notebooks will remain to be convenient for Filipinos as personal computing devices.

IDC also added that if Filipinos will continue to be engaged in PC gaming and e-sports like DoTA and League of Legends, it is possible that the Philippine PC market will grow.

“As the Philippine economy matures, Internet services and coverage improve, and more Filipinos realize the potential of the Internet beyond social interaction—such as for education, work, and business among others—demand for PCs in the country is expected to grow even further,” Agapito said.

Agapito added that in the future as the Philippine economy gets mature, if the Internet services in the country will be improved, and more Filipinos will know the true potential of the internet especially for education, work, and businesses purposes, the demands for PCs is expected to grow even further.
