The relationship between the Philippines and South Korea has prospered since the start of their diplomatic ties in 1949. The countries’ close relationship is evident in so many ways–not the least of which comes in the form of giving.

Through the years, South Korea has been significantly assisting the Philippines in its military endeavours and maritime activities. It is also one of the first to provide to the Philippines during calamities.

One of the more recent examples of South Korea’s significant contribution was during the aftermath of Super Typhoon, which devastated the Philippines in November, 2013.

The South Korean government decided to dispatch a disaster relief team to the Philippines. Aside from this, Korea also sent a military force called Araw Troops to help rebuild schools, hospitals and provinces in Leyte.

In addition, the South Korean government has also pledged $5M USD for the rehabilitation efforts in the province.

Korean Idols also played a part in giving financial assistance. Some of them even flew to entertain the calamity-stricken victims. Among these Kpop stars include Henry Lau of Super Junior, girl group Rainbow, Hyung-sik of ZE:A and balladeer K.Will.

Military upgrade

In 2015, South Korea assured they will continue to assist the Philippines in the modernization of its military through assets and equipment. The contract includes the procurement of a squadron of FA-50 “Golden Eagle” lead-in fighter aircraft. The Philippines also received a patrol combat corvette (an escort warship smaller than a destroyer), a landing craft utility and 16 rubber boats.

South Korea will also equip the Philippines with the Pohang-Class Flight III anti-submarine corvette. In exchange, the Philippines will give $100 USD as a token payment. The vessel is expected to arrive this year. The South Korean government has previously donated two ships to the Philippines.

Aid for Marawi victims

The Korean Embassy also donated P5 Million for the displaced victims of the raging Marawi conflict on July 5, 2017. Korean Ambassador Kim Jae-Shin turned over the donation through the Philippine Red Cross (PRC). Senator Richard Gordon, head of the Red Cross, received the said donation and Kim said that Korea shall participate in the rehabilitation and rebuilding of Marawi.
