History of KBP Golden Dove Awards

The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas is committed to render to the public the highest standards of service it deserves. It recognizes its responsibility of responding to the goals of the broadcast industry and the nation as a whole.

The KBP believes that one way of obtaining this broad objective is to upgrade the broadcast standards from the technical, creative, ethical, legal, social, and psychological perspective. The KBP has created the Awards and Recognition Committee to confer awards of recognition to individuals, groups and stations who have contributed directly or indirectly to the broadcast industry and who have shown outstanding performance and contributed to the improvement and upgrading of standards in their respective fields.

In 1989, it started conceptualizing a project that would encourage professionalism in the industry and elicit active participation and involvement among members in all KBP undertakings.

The awards were to be decided by a Board of Judges chosen by the Awards and Recognition Committee. The Board of Judges were to be composed of men and women of unquestionable credibility, proven integrity, honesty and impartiality.

Realizing the hassles of requiring the judges to come to the KBP office to screen all the entries and considering the requirements of their individual jobs, the Board of Judges were given the liberty to set up a procedure wherein they can monitor/screen the entries in their homes on their own free time and how the entries were to be rotated amongst themselves.

Thus in 1990, a very special project—the First Golden Dove Awards—was born. It was then chaired by Ms. Diana C. Gozum of Filipinas Broadcasting Network and former Chairman of the KBP Board of Directors.

Then and now, the top award was the “Ka Doroy” Broadcaster of the Year Award in honor to former KBP Chairman and President Teodoro Valencia. It should be noted that “Ka Doroy” was also the founding chairman of the “Popular Music Festival”, a special project of the KBP until its takeover by the Popular Music Foundation, Inc.

The First Golden Dove Awards Night was held on November 17, 1990 at the Century Park Sheraton on the last day of the 16th Top Level Management  Conference of the KBP.
