With Instagram hitting the 1 billion users mark, the social media giant announced the launch of a new standalone app where people can watch up to an hour-long vertical videos.

In an event in San Francisco, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said that IGTV will allow popular content creators to produce stunning 4K vertical videos that is a leap from their minute-long limit.

"We've come a really long way in just eight years, and it's thanks to this incredible community… that we've been able to launch IGTV," Systrom said.

As Instagram is now going head-to-head against its closest competitors Youtube and Snapchat, it aims to cater big-name celebrities, influencers, and the general public as well to step up their content.

"Anyone can be a creator – you can upload your own IGTV videos in the app or on the web to start your own channel," he explained.

The launch of IGTV was also to answer the current trend where teens watch 40% less TV than they did five years ago and 60% more on Instagram videos in just the previous year.

"How we watch is changing quickly but what we watch is changing too,"  Systrom said, pointing out the growing popularity of contents by the exponentially-growing number of creators.

For now, IGTV will be ad-free to give focus on building engagement with its users. However, Systrom cleared out that ads will be present eventually.

IGTV is now globally available in App Store and Google Playstore.
