Torre to play exhibitions in Mapua

Asia's first chess grandmaster Eugene Torre will hold simultaneous exhibition games as part of Mapua Foundation Day on January 26, 2019, Saturday, 11 a.m. at the Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT) Gym in Muralla Street, Intramuros, Manila.

Torre will play against select students and alumni during the event organized and hosted by the Mapua Filipino-Chinese Alumni Association led by its President, Edmond Aguilar and former President Victor Lau in cooperation with Mapua head coach Boyet Tardecilla and Nelson Laroza Salazar, Board 1 of Mapua Chess Team and member of the 1st NCAA Chess Team Champion of 1976.

Invited to participate are 16 chess players representing alumni and students. They include: Nelson Laroza Salazar, Alumni (Sword & Castle); Resito David, Alumni (CE-EnSe); Alumni (FIL-CHI); Alumni (EE); Alumni (ECE-COE).

Also invited to participate are Paolo Angelo Garcia (ME); Jaime Cacho, Alumni (CHE-CHM) based in California, USA and will participate thru chess.com; Melchor Pilones  (FACULTY-CE); Kasparob Andres (EE) Varsity Sr.; Aldus Austria (IE) Varsity Sr.; Paul Relativo (GE) Varsity Sr.; Paolo Medina (K12) Varsity Jr.; Stephen Von Estavillo (K12) Varsity Jr.; Kenzo Suarez (K11) Varsity Jr.; Christian Thompson (K11) Varsity Jr.; and John Reggie Salinas (K11) Varsity Jr.

In the 2010 edition held in Mapua Library, Torre tallied 14 Wins and two Draws (Nelson Laroza Salazar and board 3 player of MIT team). 

Torre is a recipient of The Outstanding Mapuan (TOM) award. The Chess event will be sponsored by the Mapua Fil-Chi Alumni Association led by its President, Edmond Aguilar and former President Victor Lau. Boyet Tindugan Tardecilla, the Mapua Chess Coach and Nelson Salazar, Board 1 of Mapua Chess Team, 1st NCAA Chess Team Champion of 1976 also met with Torre to finalize details of the event.
