Zoleta, Alcala lead PH to win

GABY Zoleta and Angelica Alcala of Lucena City in Quezon province pulled off big wins to lead Team Philippines to a 3-0 shutout of Tajikistan on Tuesday evening  in the pre-qualifying round of the Junior Federation Cup in Sri Lanka’s capital city of Colombo.

Zoleta downed Nargizakhon Yakhaeva, 6-3, 6-1, while Alcala prevailed over Samira Davlatova, 6-2, 6-0,

Gaby, who is the niece of national players Bien and Bambi Zoleta, and Alcala are again expected to lead the way when they meet Singapore in their next encounter.

Singapore had earlier beaten Tajikistan, 3-0, in an earlier encounter.

Group A has Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Maldives, while Group B has Mongolia, Lebanon, and Bangladesh.

Vietnam downed Maldives, 3-0, while Mongolia beat Bangladesh, 2-1, on Monday.

The top team from each group will advance to the next round.

Lebanon won over Bangladesh, 3-0, while Mongolia edged Bangladesh, 2-1.

The participants are seeking two slots to the final qualifying event in Gimcheon, Korea from April 22 to 27.

From there, 16 squads will battle it out for seats to the finals that will be held in San Luis Potosi, Mexico from Sept. 24 to 29.
