Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Butch Ramirez put made it loud and clear.

More than the successful hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games next year, the main goal is to become the overall champion.

“That’s the main goal,” said Ramirez on Tuesday during the groundbreaking for the construction of the New Clark City that will house a modern, world-class athletics and aquatics center that will be used to host the biennial games.

“I think Cong Peping (Philippine Olympics Committee president Cojuangco), the NSAs (National Sports Associations) and ourselves are focused on that duplication of that 2005,” Ramirez added.

Top government officials lead the ground-breaking of the New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac. Although he stressed that “the most important focused is the gold in the Tokyo Olympics,” winning the overall title in the SEA Games next year is the immediate goal.

“It’s the overall championship,” echoed Dennis Uy, the Presidential Adviser for Sports, when asked about the country’s plan.

Uy and Ramirez joined Department of Foreign Affairs Peter Cayetano and other top government officials in laying down the modular capsule for the construction of Phase 1 of the 200-hectare National Government Administrative Center at the New Clark City in Tarlac.

A world-class, sports complex that will house the 20,000-seater Athletics Center, 2,000 seats Aquatics Center and an Athletes’ Village, will be completed in time for the Philippines’ hosting of the biennial games.

Cayetano, chairman of the Manila Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee, said the venues will be completed at least two months before the games.
