THE present group that is seeking to purchase the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex from the City of Manila has no plans of tearing down all structures within the property.

Congressman Monsour del Rosario (first district of Makati) said this following a meeting with a group of developers interested in acquiring the historic place.

“Antayin natin ang presentation ng grupo na gustong bumili sa Rizal Memorial,” said del Rosario.

The city government of Manila plans to convert the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex into a sports, recreational and business center with the sale.

Earlier, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada made this clear Monday, adding the he wants it developed into a sports, recreational and business center under a joint venture agreement.”

Del Rosario revealed that the developers have plans of preserving the baseball field, the football field, the martial arts clubs and the basketball courts.

On the other hand, the places which the developers will not preserve, will be developed into a high rise residential area.

And they will have access to the remaining sports facilities around the area.

It was revealed to del Rosario that the developers also have plans to put up a sports museum for athletes who have brought honor to the country.

The developers are also thinking of setting aside a building for offices of national sports associations.

And if plans do push through, they want to make the place “more beautiful than the Ayala Museum.”

The city government is said to be negotiating with the Razon Group.

The complex was built in 1934. Since then the Rizal Memorial Coliseum has been host to several international sports events such as the Far Eastern Games, 1954 Asian Games and the Southeast Asian Games (SEA) in 1981, 1991 and 2005.

Talks on the sale of the property will resume September.
