Torres vows to take fight into the ground

YANGON, Myanmar—Filipino ONE Championship Atomweight fighter Jomary “The Zamboanginian Fighter” Torres exuded confidence as she bared her game plan for her coming fight during one-on-one interviews with international media at the Rose Garden Hotel here yesterday.

Torres battles Indonesian kickboxer Nita Dea at ONE: Hero’s Dream at Thuwunna Indoor Stadium on Friday.

Myanmar’s sporting icon ONE Championship World Middleweight Champion “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang takes on heavyweight Alain Ngalani in a non-title open weight bout in the main event.

Torres said she will take the fight into the ground and will not trade long range hits against her kick-boxer opponent.

“Striking is really her strength. I will try to wrestle her. For me it would be dangerous to try to fight her striking game. If I’m not careful she could connect with powerful strikes,” said Torres in Filipino.

Jomary Torres (left) grabs the leg of Rika Ishige during their ONE Championship fight in Macau won by Torres.

Torres won her last fight against Thai martial arts superstar Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige by submission via rear naked choke in the second round at ONE: Kings & Conquerors in Macau, China last August.

Torres rocked Ishige several times with her heavy handed punches in the first round which Ishige barely survived. Torres stalked Ishige in the second round. Ishige tried to keep Torres at bay with kicks to the body. Instead, Torres grabbed Ishige’s right leg, took her down to the canvas and started raining down ground and pound blows.

Ishige turned around to avoid hits to her face. With Ishige’s back turned to her Torres slipped her arm under Ishige’s jaw and choked her into submission.

Despite the decisive victory Torres said she wasn’t as prepared as she wanted to be against Ishige. She is better prepared now against Dea.

“I will avoid just trading strikes with Dea. I will not risk that. I’ve prepared hard for this fight. I am confident of winning. I don’t know what round. But I know I will win,” said Torres with conviction.

Filipino MMA fighters Eugene Toquero, Jeremy “The Jaguar” Miado and Burn “The Hitman” Soriano will see action in the undercards at ONE: Hero’s Dream.

The veteran Toquero tries to arrest an alarming three-fight losing streak (against Stefer Rahardian last April; Danny Kingad, December 2016; and Adriano Moraes, March 2016 ) when he takes on Ma Hao Bin of China.

Miado battles Pongsiri Mitsatit of Thailand.

Miado suffered his only defeat to Robin Catalan last April. He was riding the crest of a six-fight winning streak when he lost by split decision.

Soriano tests the mettle of Chen Lei of China. Soriano has had a checkered professional career. He is a spectacular fighter who has not gone the distance yet. He has three losses and three wins with all the fights ending by knockout or submission.
