GlobalPort overwhelms Blackwater 5, 101 to 76

GLOBALPORT got back to its winning ways as it blasted Blackwater, 101-76 in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome last night.

Fresh from a 78-70 victory over Rain or Shine in their last outing, the Batang Pier notched their first back-to-back win despite still missing the services of Terrence Romeo. They improved to a 2-2 win-loss record.

The Elite, on the other hand, suffered their second straight loss and fell to a 2-3 card.

An explosive first half was all Globalport needed to put away Blackwater for good, erecting a commanding 61-37 advantage at the break with Sean Anthony, Stanley Pringle and Kelly Nabong taking charge for the Batang Pier’s offense, while limiting the Elite to only 14 points in the second period.

That breakaway by Globalport proved to be the turning point as it sustained the lead in the second half against a visibly weary Blackwater squad, who played its third game in seven days.

So strong was the Batang Pier’s game last night that they afforded to bring in their second stringers—and all of them delivered points.

Anthony topscored for Globalport with 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Pringle, on the other hand, turned in a double-double performance of 17 points and 11 rebounds and was the biggest factor in the Batang Pier’s offensive run.

Nabong chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds.

Globalport coach Pido Jarencio noted the string of games Blackwater played this week and they just took advantaged of it.

“Naglaro sila ng back-to-back-to-back, so we just kept on running,” said Jarencio. “We pressured them.”

“We hit our target, just played good defense all the way, and yan ang result,” added Jarencio, as the Batang Pier recorded their second largest winning margin in franchise history, just a shade below their 108-78 rout of NLEX last June 2015 in the Governors’ Cup that year, also under Jarencio.

Mac Belo and Mike Digregorio were the only Blackwater players in double figures, finishing with 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Philippines is looking to make waves by parading the best team possible when it hosts the 2018 FIBA 3×3 World Cup on June 8 to 12 at Philippine Arena.

With still a few months to go before tournament, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is already in the process of coming up with a competitive roster.
