Subic Bay—They’re back.

Reed, Steffen reclaim IRONMAN 70.3 titles
Tim Reed (right) unleashed a strong finish while Swiss Caroline Steffen (left) recalled her fierce form to rule the women’s side in the Century Tuna Ironman 70.3.

Tim Reed and Caroline Steffen, former winners who yielded the title in previous IRONMAN 70.3 Philippines races, regained their winning forms to rule the men’s and women’s category of the 2019 Century Tuna IRONMAN 70.3 Philippines held here yesterday, June 2.

Reed said he was very happy to win again and particularly overjoyed that he won here in the Philippines.

“It was fantastic. It was really a hard race and just some of the hardest condition I’ve faced in a while. It’s always a lot of fun to race in Sunrise Events races. They’re so well organized,” said Reed.

Tim Van Berkel placed second to Reed while 2018 IRONMAN Philippines winner Nick Baldwin was third.

Steffen on the other hand said she was quite comfortable during the race where she led from start to finish.

“It just feels great to win again. I’ve been racing in Subic so long that I’m really quite comfortable. I had a good swim. I had some problems with the bike and I had a difficult time riding the hills. But I got off to a really good run which led to the win,” said Steffen.

Dimity Lee Duke placed second to Steffen while Laura Wood was third.

Preparation was key to her victory according to Steffen.

“I invest so much time in what I’m doing. I bring my family everywhere I go even when I train. I work really hard. I just want to be known as an honest, hard racer,” said Steffen.

Close to one thousand triathletes from 41 countries participated in the race held at the triathlon capital of Philippines, Subic.

The IRONMAN 70.3 race was the culmination of week-long activities which started with the Big Boss Cement Beach Clean-up of the Subic Bay Boardwalk. It was a public service activity of globally respected Big Boss Cement, which produces cement products with the highest level of structural strength.

Big Boss Cement Marketing Manager Josephine De Leon said the clean-up was the first of their many activities geared toward preserving the environment.

“As baby steps as it might be, we consider it as a huge success for us in Big Boss. We are definitely doing more environment preservation activities may it be on land and ocean in the near future,” said De Leon.

The Big Boss Cement executive said the clean-up was made possible through the cooperation of both the public and private sector.

“We are overwhelmed by the support of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary Group, PNP Maritime in Subic, SBMA Fire Department and Gordon College,” said De Leon.
