Pinkfong’s ‘Baby Shark’ takes over the Internet

The “Baby Shark Challenge” has become a nationwide sensation in the Philippines with more than thousands of video uploads across social media platforms, after seeing popular K-pop stars like Girls’ Generation, Red Velvet and Black Pink, as well as Filipino actor Drew Arellano, covering the song and dance. 

Over the past month, fans across the country have been uploading videos of themselves dancing to the catchy tune of Pinkfong’s “Baby Shark” song with the hashtag #BabySharkChallenge.  

Pinkfong, the original creator of the popular “Baby Shark” song series that achieved over 900 million global views, is behind this digital phenomenon. 

The "Baby Shark" song shot into fame for its catchy beat, simple lyrics and fun dance movement. The song mentions the members of a shark family, starting from the baby to the grandparents.

Pinkfong is a global children’s brand, best known for its fun videos and apps aimed at helping children learn. Its YouTube channels have won the YouTube Gold Play Button and boast more than 4.2 million subscribers and 3.5 billion cumulative views. 

Over the past month, the #BabySharkChallenge has fueled Pinkfong’s popularity in the Philippines. Since the beginning of September, the number of new subscribers on Pinkfong YouTube channel in the country demonstrated a sharp increase of 2,000 percent.

Pinkfong’s mobile application series also hold the distinction of being one of the most downloaded apps on the App Store and Google Play Store within the Education and Family category. In particular, the Baby Shark App, which shows various versions of Baby Shark videos and offers fun games for kids, has ranked No. 1 on the most downloaded app on the Family category (Music & Video) as of Sept. 28. 

“We are really excited to see how Filipino users have embraced Pinkfong’s Baby Shark song and turned it into a digital sensation by creating the #BabySharkChallenge,” said Ryan Lee, the head of international business at Pinkfong. “To seize the momentum, we will continue to roll out more entertaining content that can help children learn in the most fun way and can also be enjoyed by the entire family,” he added.
