Asia’s first demonic possession
It was in 1953 when the name Clarita Villanueva became the talk of the town. It was splashed in newspapers especially about her alleged demonic possession. Different accounts told of her supposed demonic possession while she was in jail.
The story of 17-year-old Clarita—the first reported demonic possession in Asia—is the inspiration behind the film Clarita that has already grossed over P70-million as of June 27.
The film focuses on the puzzling occurrence when Clarita was incarcerated. The character is played by Jodi Sta. Maria in the film and it shows how Clarita’s faith and those of the people who tried to help her were tested because of the obstacles they had to overcome.
Derick Cabrido studied the records of Villanueva’s case before he filmed her supposed possession. Clarita, a probinsyana, traveled to Manila to look for her father, but, due to some unfortunate incidents, she landed in jail.
In her detention cell, she started manifesting what others thought were signs of demonic possession. While it was suspected that the possessions started even before her incarceration, it became more haunting when she was already behind bars.
Clarita is also screening in Paris (July 14), July 26 in the U.S., 28 July in Dublin, Ireland; and Aug.4 in Oslo, Norway.
