For Chris Tiu, Christine Jacob and other athletes Sleep is power

Much has been said about the importance of a good diet and a regular exercise regimen in a healthy lifestyle. What is not mentioned enough is the power of quality sleep in ensuring that the body performs at its optimum levels. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the quality and amount of sleep athletes get is often the key to winning. Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep is said to be important in particular as it provides energy to both the brain and body, during sleep, hormones that help in muscular recovery and regeneration. The REM phase of sleep is likewise thought to be involved in the process of storing memories, learning, and balancing your mood, helping you focus during your waking hours. The recommended amount of sleep is 7 to 9 hours and if sleep is cut short, the body doesn’t have time to repair memory, consolidate memory, and release hormones.

International athlete Serena Williams knows the power of sleep very well. It’s her secret weapon. The top-seeded tennis player, who is one of the highest profile individual sport athletes in the world, says that a good night’s rest has been powering her tournament wins through the years. She has recently been launched as a Tempur global ambassador, encouraging more people to value sleep towards optimum performance. Serena has been sleeping on Tempur mattresses for 10 years, and brings her Tempur Symphony pillows with her wherever she goes.  “I am really able to get a deep, undisturbed sleep. It makes a huge difference,” she says.   “I can lie down and power up.”

She is at the forefront of the brand’s latest international campaign, “Tempur. This Sleep Is Power.”

Serena is not alone in her advocacy towards quality sleep. Several local athletes have joined in the Tempur campaign to talk about how a good night’s rest helps them win both in life and in sports. Here are some of our top sports personalities who share Serena’s views about the power of sleep:

Christine Jacob Sandejas represented the country in the swimming competitions of the SEA Games in 1983 and in the 1984 Summer Olympics. She currently swims in relay leg for triathlons, training with her husband for competitions. She is also up early every day to anchor her morning news program at CNN.  “Sports is part of my life. Aside from swimming, I play tennis with my family,” she shares. As an athlete, a mom, and a career woman, Christine puts a premium on the power of sleep. “It is one of the most neglected aspects in general, whether you are an athlete or not. It is part of how we function properly, more so if you add more stress on top of your daily grind, such as being an athlete or have to wake up early for your job, she adds. “A good night’s rest helps with your hormones, and at my age, it is all about hormones,” she laughs. “If I get enough rest, I feel so refreshed and ready to survive the whole day. My kids love me more too!”    A Tempur mattress is surely perfect for Christine.

Chris Tiu of PBA’s Rain or Shine wears many hats. Aside from his illustrious basketball career for both the pro league and the National Team, he is also an entrepreneur and showbiz personality. He is also a new dad. “My family knows that I am very big on sleep. I try to get eight hours as much as possible, but because of my many roles, I try to get at least seven hours. I also like to take naps in the daytime,” he shares. Sleep deprivation comes with a cost for him. He feels sluggish, he says, and more prone to injury. “My work is physically, mentally, and emotionally draining. The only way I can recover and perform at my best is when I get quality sleep. It allows the mind, body, and soul to recover.” He uses the Tempur Original Pillow to help him achieve quality sleep, he says. “It really makes a difference, because it is the perfect contour for my neck. I have never felt as comfortable with any other pillow and I don’t wake up with anything aching in my neck or shoulder area,” he adds.  Chris is really looking forward to sleeping in his new Tempur mattress when he and his family move into their new home soon.

Clarice Patrimonio brought home a silver medal for Tennis at the 2017 SEA Games. She is currently training for more competitions, aside from balancing everything with her school work as an HRM student at the National University. A millennial at 23, she admits that it is hard for her to sleep early because of her social media habit but says that she has realized the effects of lack of sleep on her performance. “I get sleepy in school, on the court, my response time is slower and I don’t play very well,” she observed. “This is why I am teaching myself to sleep on time. I believe that a winning attitude has to come with the discipline to take care of my body. Of course, it would also help if I sleep in a comfortable bed so I don’t toss and turn at night.”  Tempur Pillows  guarantee that Clarice stays on top of her game by getting  the best sleep she needs.

Jake Robrigado Letts has been with the Philippine Volcanoes for 12 years as a player and now also as the team’s Interim Managing Director or formally as National Team Head. He says he agrees with Serena 100 percent. “Athletes need their rest. Before a tournament, we go on rigid training 3-4 hours daily under the hot sun. Sometimes, we play for two days straight. We’re healed by sleep, so it is a key moment for all of us. We need to be sure that our bodies are ready for the games. It’s the quality of sleep that’s more important. It’s really getting into the zone.”  The team uses Tempur Travel Kits to help them achieve a good quality of sleep in their quarters “It changes the quality of our sleep while traveling and eventually change the quality of our performance for the better,” he says.

Lady Volcanoes Helena “Hilla” Indigne  (Center/Fly Half), Rassiel “Rara” Sales (Winger), and Kaye Llanie “Aye” Honoras (Fly Half Utility) talk  about their training schedules and how sleep helps them give their best shot. When in season, their training is held three times a day and their coaches tell them to sleep eight hours and do power naps in between the trainings. It helps them rest, recover, and focus, they say. Their Tempur Travel Kits and accessories are a big help when it comes to following their coaches’ instructions. Hilla shares, “Normally, nights before the tournament, we’re tired, agitated and anxious. Our Tempur Travel Kit and accessories help us relax while we travel.” Rara agrees. “Aside from training, traveling to compete is really stressful and we don’t really get to be in business class when we travel, so Tempur travel accessories help  us rest more on the plane.” Aye takes every opportunity to sleep, even on flight layovers. “When we have ones that last more than 4 hours, I really just want to sleep. So I would rather stay in the airport benches and take a nap. Tempur travel accessories  make us comfortable on those times.”  The three athletes say that they believe a Tempur kind of sleep recharges them and improves their overall performance. “It will empower us to give our best shot as we represent the country here and abroad.”
