Who made noise in 2013?

THE video scandals are back; a queen returns as another one fell from grace; two kings are now without kingdoms and family feud and separations are 2013 rage but a crown tops everything as far as this year’s top newsmaker is concerned.

Who are these people in show business? We will reveal them to you in decsending order

10. Marian Rivera

GMA’s top female star fell hard in 2012, did not start 2013 quite right but a series of good deeds and great publicities gave her a solid return and firm grasp on the title Primetime Queen.

Marian Rivera started 2013 with not-so-happy news as she separated with her long time manager Popoy Caritativo and moved to join the Triple A talent management of the APT Entertainment group. What could have been a disastrous career-killing move became a blessing in disguise. Suddenly, Marian’s name became ‘sweet’ again as endorsements returned and new products signed her up from cell phone manufacturers to lingerie and perfume plus more. She also became a movie producer too and recipients of several acting and achievement awards.

Marian is also having her cake and eating it too as her relationship with long time boyfriend Dingdong Dantes is in its all time high as more fans are returning the same way endorsements are coming back, so everything is a win-win situation for Marian this time around.

9. Richard Gutierrez and Willie Revillame

They both represented their network so it was shocking to note that GMA’s original primetime king and the face of the reorganized TV5 suddenly are without contracts and network to reign on.

Richard Gutierrez was a homegrown Kapuso superstar and son of Annabelle Rama and Eddie Gutierrez. He is also the twin-brother of Raymond Gutierrez. He got his biggest break when he starred in the show that overturned the favors for GMA Network with Mulawin overtaking the shows on the other network. That was 11 years ago and Richard became the acknowledged primetime king of the Kapuso network.

Over at TV5, after leaving ABS-CBN, Willie Revillame got the biggest network contract of almost a billion a year hosting and co-producing his own game show.

But 2013 being the year of split up and break up, GMA and TV5 respectively decided not to renew the contracts of their kings, Richard and Willie, and now 2014 becomes the waiting game for their fans as they wondered when the two will be seen again on TV. While waiting, Willie has his Christmas album to promote while Richard is finishing his GMA Films contract with a movie.

8. Sarah Lahbati

The fifth ultimate female survivor from StarStruck fell in love with the network’s primetime king. There’s a saying among showbiz folk that when one is lucky in love, he/she is definitely unlucky in his/hercareer. Sarah Labhati became very, very unlucky.

Can Anne Curtis keep her
endorsement deals?
Sarah and Richard Gutierrez fell in love while they were taping the GMA primetime series Makapiling Kang Muli. It started beautifully at first as their team up even resulted in a movie, Seduction. But then it was the season that the primetime king is having trouble with the network and so Sarah got involved too. Contesting her network contract and even suing GMA Films president Annette Gozon Abrogar, Sarah’s career evaporated into thin air or dissolved in a murky liquid.

True love still prevails for the pair but that doesn’t include careers. Sarah is now a plain house-girlfriend shuttling to and from the Philippines and Switzerland and an occasional US side trip. Meanwhile, all the charges she filed against Atty. Annette Gozon Abrogar are getting dismissed. In the meantime, her career continues float in limbo.

7. My Husband’s Lover

There are several TV shows with higher ratings this year than My Husband’s Lover and certainly there are more TV shows that lasted longer on air but the controversial gay love series of GMA wrote history in the social networking site as the first and currently only TV show that trended daily while on air.

It started controversially; the Kapuso primetime offered Philippine TV’s very first mature gay love-themed series with Dennis Trillo and Tom Rodriguez along with with Carla Abellana as the girl in between. It may not have started big in the ratings and even in the commercial load but social media savvy audience started talking about it and the show trended nightly—all 60-plus days as part of the Telebabad block. There were a lot of shows that trended but so far, only MHL trended continuously while on air.

To qualify the show’s success, it was Tom’s successful move from ABS-CBN to GMA; Bench gave Tom and Dennis their very first pair endorsement, and it also gave the two a chance to have a duet album from GMA Records called Tom-Den and what’s more, the only non-singing serious TV show that got a successful US concert tour.

6. Showbis splitup

Celebrity break ups are a dime a dozen but this year’s so called Baker’s Dozen are a surprise list including long time relationships and those expected to end up at the altar and even the fairy tale stories with hordes of social networking fans and followers.

Senator Bong Revilla backs out of
Iglesia ni Kristo movie
Kapuso Jennylyn Mercado split up with Kapamilya Luis Manzano and even Batangas Governor Vilma Santos felt bad about it. Former GMA girl Angel Locsin and former GMA hunk Phil Younghusband called it quits too and so did GMA young love team Joyce Ching and Kristoffer Martin after almost three years of young love. Another young Kapuso love team Elmo Magalona and Lauren Young reportedly broke up but no one’s talking.

Cristine Reyes and Derek Ramsay doing a movie together got coupled and un-coupled in a month’s time. Just as 2013 is about to end, GMA girl Rhian Ramos and celebrity jock KC Montero also threw the towel in a supposedly ‘happy breakup.’ And in case you’re interested, Tiya Pusit also split up with her under 20- year old boyfriend this year.

5. Barretto versus Santiago

It all started with a siblings feud that got bigger when it became a family war and ended with a couple’s separation as two big showbiz family names are now involved in this biggest separation of them all; one time TV superstar Claudine Barretto and action prince Raymart Santiago.

Claudine has always been infamous with her sibling rivalry with older sisters Gretchen Barretto and Marjorie Barretto but this year, everyone in their family got involved including their parents and the other male siblings. Just when everyone thought it will be contained with the Barrettos, Claudine and Raymart split up and the civil war became an all out war involving the two families.

The separation issue will continue next year, no doubt out about that but the scoreboard seems to favor Gretchen who is still getting a lot of endorsements and Raymart, whose career continues with an afternoon soap on GMA Network, Villa Quintana. The biggest loser of this family feud is Claudine who is left without a career.

4. Sex videos

Celebrities involved in sex videos are usually those who are actually controversial enough to begin with like sexy stars or wannabe hosts. This year’s crop has a surprising cast; a serious young actress, a renowned singer of a famous band, a top TV comedian and a backup dancer.

Senator Jinggoy Estrada’s showbiz
career is at a standstill
Two (and could be counting) sex videos of couple Neri Naig and Chito Miranda went viral and scandalous and so the Parokya Ni Edgar lead singer secured the help of the National Bureau of Investigation to prosecute the supposed perpetrator. Meanwhile, Eat Bulaga comedy boy Wally and EB Babe Yosh Rivera got a not so amicable breakup and so a sex video leaked immediately on You Tube.

Wally was dropped out and still nowhere to be seen anywhere near his Dabarkads in Eat Bulaga Yosh resigned from the group and Chito seems to be very affected by it all. As to Neri, she is ironically getting a second wind with her career as she is about to be re-launched next year in a new TV5 anthology Obsession together with Bianca King, Marvin Agustin and Martin Escudero.

3. Anne Curtis

The number one endorser with 31 brands carrying her face and name and the only local celebrity with over 4 million Twitter followers eclipsing everyone in the social media popularity also has the biggest single personal fall from grace thanks to one unforgettable party night.

In a party she gave for a friend, Anne reportedly got pissed off while inside the rest room as somebody was banging the door so she shouted and slap several people she first encountered after opening the restroom door including top male endorser John Lloyd Cruz, a leading PR woman and a publisher and a slew of insult to Phoemela Baranda that is this year’s most famous quote: I can buy you, your friends and this club.

JLC remained quiet on this one. JR Isaac, the one who reported the incident a week after it happened, accepted Anne’s apology and Phoemala totally denied everything. Anne apologized via Twitter and everything seems well again but in everyone’s mind, from 31 endorsement in 2013, how many will drop out in the list next year.

2.Napoles showbiz connection

A national scandal erupted when private citizen Janet Lim Napoles got involved in the biggest financial scam involving the Philippine government Priority Development Assistance Fund now infamously called the PDAF scam and with her fall came an electrifying showbiz connection involving two actor-senators.

Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla, both action stars, were named as among those who benefitted in this multi-billion scam. Both senators denied this the same way another Senator, Juan Ponce Enrile denied his involvement just as well but more than the senior statesman, it was the showbiz careers of both Bong and Jinggoy that was felt the most and was talked about the most.

Suddenly, Senator Bong is now without a festival movie this year while Senator Jinggoy’s latest movie was put on hold. It was also a bleak Christmas as families of both Senators flew abroad so it was less two big showbiz Christmas parties this year.

1. Miss World

In the year of one of the most devastating natural disasters in the country, the country won three international beauty titles and two runners up but one crown, the most coveted one for the past decades, was finally won; that of Miss World.

StarStruck Avenger turned Pinoy Big Brother housemate turned Kapatid perennial guest Megan Young gave this honor to the country when she was crowned the very first Miss World of the Philippines. The closest the country had in that crown search was way back in 1973 when Evangeline Pascual took home the First Runner Up trophy.

2013 is also the year we got the very first Supra International, our fifth Miss International crown and a fifth straight Miss Universe runner up placing but Megan’s winning will forever be remembered as the first Miss World crown.

Now, who are going to start the year with a bang and who will follow suit to make up our list for the newsmakers of 2014. Your guess will be good as ours.
