Sen. Nancy Binay: Clearly a Red scare spin

Senator Nancy Binay's statement in the article titled "Ex-NDF man: 9 'trapos' paying millions for Red endorsement":

Anent the article titled "Ex-NDF man: 9 'trapos' paying millions for Red endorsement"—which was published on your website on April 17 and accompanied by a photo apparently taken from a different event that was not at all related to the story—making mention of five senatorial candidates paying up to P20 million each to gain the endorsement of the CPP-NDF-NPA.

As a matter of fact, another article saw print in your paper on the same day titled, "Local bets pay for Red support," which was based on an unverified press statement purportedly from one "Ka Nonoy" Alcantara, who introduced himself as a former NDF liaison officer handling its electoral unit.

At first, I found both stories amusing for they were "clearly a red scare spin" of a black propaganda to discredit MAKABAYAN-endorsed candidates running for local and national posts. Besides, I know for a fact that the invitation from MAKABAYAN to be part of their list of senatoriables was based on our common principles and legislative agenda.

I have, however, come to realize the danger we as a nation face if we allow outright lies to go unchallenged. Allowing falsity to dictate the narrative unchallenged would only contribute to the chaos and hatred that have resulted from the blurring of the line that demarcates truth from falsehood.

Thus, to set the record straight, please let me be forthright in stating that in no case was I ever asked for any financial consideration in exchange for any support or endorsements. I deny in strongest terms the allegations made by "Ka Nonoy."

His statements are absolutely untrue and baseless, and the challenge is for him to substantiate his claims accusing me and my fellow senatorial candidates in the MAKABAYAN Coalition of paying in exchange for support. That is if this "Ka Nonoy" even exists in the first place.

The Manila Standard is a reputable media organization and has my highest respect for all its dedicated editors and staff.

Rest assured, you have my support in fighting fake news and misinformation, and in preventing trolls and troublemakers from ruining news organizations. It is but unfortunate that there are quarters who use the vulnerability of media to spread fake news.
