Typhoon gains strength near PAR

Typhoon “Kong-Rey” (international name) has intensified and is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Monday afternoon, by which time it will be called “Queenie.”

As of 3 a.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Kong-Rey was last spotted at 1,565 kilometers east of southern Luzon.

The typhoon, to be locally named Queenie once inside PAR, was packing maximum sustained winds of up to 130 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 160 kph.

Kong-Rey, moving west northwest at 15 kph, was not expected to make landfall in any part of the country.

Pagasa weather forecaster Ariel Rojas said the trough of the typhoon would bring cloudy to cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

Floods and landslides are also possible due to severe thunderstorms.

The northern section of northern Luzon will experience strong gale force winds from northeast with rough to very rough coastal waters.

Temperature in Metro Manila ranges from 25-33 degrees Celsius; Tuguegarao 25-34 degrees Celsius; Baguio City 16-24 degrees Celsius; Angeles City 25-32 degrees Celsius; Lipa City 23-33 degrees Celsius; Metro Cebu, 23-34 degrees Celsius; and Metro Davao 26-33 degrees Celsius.
