The Commission on Elections said Thursday it had yet to decide if it would also extend the voters’ registration period for the May 2019 midterm elections.

The poll body made the statement following its decision to move the period for the filing of Certificates of Candidacy for next year’s elections to Oct. 11 to 17 from Oct. 1 to 5.

“That is under consideration right now. The commission en banc will still have to decide on it,” Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said in a statement.

Earlier, some members of the House of Representatives, particularly the Makabayan bloc, urged the Comelec to extend the voters’ registration for the coming elections until Jan. 13, 2019.

Jimenez said they were also reviewing other events in the Calendar of Activities in connection with the May 2019 polls.

“The schedule of subsequent activities are currently being reviewed for possible adjustments should the need arise,” Jimenez said.

For now, he said, only the period for filing CoCs had been reset.

The Comelec moved the CoC filing period to a later date at the request of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The voters’ registration period for next year’s midterm polls began on July 2 and will end on Sept. 29.
