FORMER senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday urged the Supreme Court, sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal, to expedite its manual recount of the votes in the vice presidential race in May 2016.

Marking two years since he filed his election protest against Vice President Leni Robredo, Marcos appeared before the PET to witness the ongoing recount and to meet his supporters in front of the Supreme Court along Padre Faura.

“The recount is slow. I want to see how it can be improved and if we can do something to help speed up the process,” Marcos said.

Marcos filed his protest on June 29, 2016, claiming Robredo’s camp cheated in the elections.

Robredo won the vice presidential race with 14,418,817 votes, which were 263,473 more than Marcos’ 14,155,344 votes.

“Two years is too long to keep the people waiting. What were the true results in the last elections? If there are anomalies and mistakes, who are responsible?” Marcos said.

“If we still don’t know the real results, two years is too long for the people to wait. What happened and who is responsible for what happened?”

Marcos said he went to the PET to check on the system for the recount.

“We’re hoping to find ways to help the process to be finished ASAP,” he said.

Marcos did not discuss merits of the case or any update on the recount due to the gag order issued by the tribunal on both parties.

The recount covers three pilot provinces identified by Marcos in his protest against Robredo. He is contesting the results in 132,446 precincts in 39,221 clustered precincts covering 27 provinces and cities.
