Self-assertive news website Rappler and its founder and chief executive officer Maria Ressa were chosen by a group of international media organizations as the first recipients of a fund-raising campaign for the defense of press freedom.

The Committee to Protect Journalists and First Look Media’s Press Freedom Defense Fund, with the International Center for Journalists and Reporters Without Borders announced Tuesday their partnership on a fundraising campaign “to provide legal support for journalists facing extensive legal battles meant to suppress critical journalism.”

“The first recipients of this newly created campaign will be Rappler, the Philippine-based news organization, and its founder and editor, renowned journalist Maria Ressa,” CPJ said.

Ressa is accused of violating the Tax Code by failing to declare “correct and accurate” information in quarterly sales receipts from Rappler Holdings Corp.’s issuance and sale of Philippine Depositary Receipts worth P2.45 million.

This allegedly resulted in a value-added tax deficiency of P294,258.58, excluding surcharge and interest, to the damage of the government.

Ressa considers the charges politically motivated.

Rappler has published pieces critical of President Rodrigo Duterte and his unrelenting campaign against illegal drugs.
