Deputy Speaker and Sorsogon Rep. Evelina Escudero on Thursday lauded President Rodrigo Duterte for “finally” granting the Sorsogon State College a full university status under Republic Act 11088 or the Sorsogon State University starting Oct. 26.

“On behalf of all Sorsoganons, we thank President Duterte for signing this bill into law. It is a well-deserved recognition for an institution that continuously produces top-notch graduates and has been a constant source of pride for the province,” she said.

The Sorsogon State College is the “very first” university in the province.

It is now called the Sorsogon State University.

As the province’s lawmaker, Escudero said it was her responsibility to bat for a quality education for their constituents.

The Sorsogon Trade School was founded in 1907 and was converted into Sorsogon College of Arts by virtue or Republic Act 704 in 1952 and into Sorsogon State College in 1993.

The inception can be traced back from the consolidation of the three biggest national vocational schools in the province—the Bulan Vocational High School, Magallanes Vocational and Fishery School, and Sorsogon National Agricultural School in Castilla.

“I persistently pushed for the conversion because SSC’s credentials earned it. As a representative, it is my mandate to bring my constituents the quality education they deserve and support the initiatives that will help them prosper as an institution,” Escudero said.

“I’d like to express my appreciation to the Commission on Higher Education, my co-authors, House committees on higher and technical education and appropriations, and my colleagues for helping us achieve the status. Thank you for backing the conversion despite having to attend to a long list of other priority legislation,” she added.
