THE Commission on Human Rights on Friday lauded the Senate for the approval of its 2019 budget of P689,706 million.

“This budget shall help us bring the institution to this direction further in the interest of fighting for the dignity of all,” spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia said.

She said the committee on finance composed of Senators Panfilo Lacson and Gregorio Honasan passed the CHR's budget appropriation.

She, however, said the schedule for the Senate plenary hearing has yet to be determined.

The agency proposed budget amounted to P689,706 million, which is -0.48 percent lower than the previous year due to the decrease in allocation for capital outlay.

"Nonetheless, key thrusts focusing on the Commission’s protection, promotion, and policy mandate are intended to be improved with the current budget proposal," De Guia said.

The CHR has requested an additional fund from the House of Representatives and the Senate not covered by the 2019 National Expenditure Program, including the acquisition of land and building for three regional offices, human rights research grants program and increase in funds for financial assistance, among others.
