PAL tones up security fixes

LEGACY carrier Philippine Airlines announced on Thursday it would strengthen security measures for all New Zealand-bound flights beginning on Sunday.

The airline, according to PAL corporate communications department head and spokesperson Ma. Cielo Villaluna, came up with the new measures in line with the regulatory requirements of Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand.

Villaluna said all passengers departing on PAL’s Manila-Auckland flights would receive additional screening of their checked and carry-on baggage.

“We advise all our New Zealand-bound passengers departing on PR-218 [flight] to expect a slightly different screening setup at the airport, prior to check-in and/or at the gate.  We therefore ask you to plan for an earlier arrival at the airport to allow for more time for the mandated screening,” she said.

The airline management sought understanding and cooperation from passengers “as we carry out these additional screening procedures, which are intended for your safety and security.”

Aside from New Zealand bound flights, PAL has also enhanced strict measures for its US-bound flights— from Manila to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu and Guam, and from Vancouver to New York in compliance with the regulatory requirements of the US Department of Homeland Security for all flights operating from the last point of departure to the United States.

PAL imposed a measure subjecting all portable electronic devices—larger than a cellphone or smartphone, and powder-like substances (12 ounces or larger) of passengers bound for the United States to additional airport screening.

The strict screening for portable substance was enforced in July last year while the security measure involving powder-like substances is being implemented since June this year.
