LTFRB explains Duterte's deadline for jeepney phase out

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairman Martin Delgra explains, President Rodrigo Duterte's January 1 deadline for the phase out of old jeepney units is "an expression of urgency."

Delgra made this statement during the Thursday hearing of the House of Representatives on government's modernization program for public utility vehicles (PUVs).

"It is an expression of urgency in so far as having to push this as firmly as we can," he told lawmakers.

House members are conducting a hearing on the issue after the two-day strike staged by transport group PISTON last Monday and Tuesday.

The protests prompted Malacanang to suspend government work and school classes for 2 days.

Caloocan Representative Edgardo Erice observed that while the President had set an ultimatum, the LTFRB has not made any announcement as to the specific time and date the phase out of old jeepneys will be implemented.

Representatives from PISTON and other transport groups were also present in the hearing.

They expressed their positions on the government plan.

Transport group FEJODAP is in favor or jeepney modernization while another group, PCDO-ACTO, is against the replacement of old units with the so-called e-jeepneys.
